Ensuring GMO rules are fair for farmers and growers
-
Government has not yet consulted with farmers. The schedule for the bill appears to be tight.
Give farmers, growers and industry enough time to:
understand the proposed changes and potential impacts on their farming businesses; and
be part of defining the regulations they will need to work within.
-
Clear, factual understanding of the risks of GMOs for farmers, consumers, and New Zealand as a whole.
-
Any changes to GMO regulations must be fair and meet these key tests:
Economic Benefit: Prove a net economic gain for farmers and the national economy.
Transparency: Ensure traceability and transparency throughout the supply chain.
Accountability: Owners and users of GMOs must be held liable for contamination or damages.
What This Means
Why This Matters
New Zealand’s GMO-free farming gives us a competitive edge and ensures premium market value, especially in markets like the USA. However, proposed government policies could jeopardize this distinction by allowing genetic engineering releases.
Who We Are
We are a group of concerned farmers across many sectors. We felt compelled to speak up on learning of the proposed changes to Gene Technology Regulation.
